Disorders in egg cell maturation is a very common reason for female infertility. This is often caused by a hormonal dysfunction in the ovaries. If a hormonal imbalance occurs, not only egg cell maturation, but also ovulation, as well as the formation of the corpus luteum can be negatively influenced.
Fallopian tubes act as a "conveyor belt" for the sperm cell to reach the egg cell, and also for the fertilised egg cells to be transported inside the cervix cavity. If the fallopian tubes stick together or are blocked for a different reason, the transport of egg cells can be more difficult or even impossible. Fallopian tube blockage can be caused by inflammatory diseases, previous tubal pregnancies, surgery or spontaneous growths of uterine tissue outside of the uterus (endometriosis).
Endometriosis occurs when the uterine lining ( endometrium) is found outside of the uterus. This misplaced tissue can not only be located in the bowel, intestines and abdominal cavity, but also in the reproductive organs such as the ovaries or fallopian tubes, so that conception is complicated.
The cause of endometriosis is relatively unknown.
Similar to a bottleneck, the cervix is the most narrow part that the sperm has to pass through on its way to the egg cell. Scar tissue (through surgery), blockages or inflammatory diseases can be impediments to conception in this area. Benign growths of muscle ( myomas) in the uterus are sometimes the reason for persisting infertility and miscarriages.
In very rare cases a malformation - usually congenital - is the reason for the unfulfilled desire to have children.
Female infertility is often caused by the appearance of many small cysts (small bubbles filled with fluid) on the ovary ( polycystic ovary).
