Male Infertility

The most common reason for male infertility is a decrease in the production of normal sperm with good motility.

Reasons therefore can be manifold:

  • A mumps infection during childhood
  • Varicocele or varicose veins in the scrotum
  • Undescended testis
  • Hormonal problems
  • Diabetes
  • Tumour surgery
  • Damage of the genetical code
  • Stress
  • Infections
  • Environmental factors
  • Severe nicotine and/or alcohol abuse

However, in most cases the cause of male infertility is unknown.

A further, although rarer cause, is a deficiency in transporting the sperm. In this case, enough sperm cells are produced by the man, but, as the spermatic ducts are obstructed, they cannot reach the female body. The main reasons are underdeveloped or obstructed epididymal tubes or a sterilisation.
