Outpatient
Allows a person to return home on the same day of a surgical procedure. No overnight hospitalization is necessary . (The opposite to in-patient).
Ovaries
The ovaries are plum sized organs located on either side of the uterus that produce mature egg cells for fertilisation. The ovaries secrete the hormones estrogen and gestagen (gestatio = pregnancy, gen = to produce).
Ovulation
The egg cell is released from the ovary and enters the fallopian tube.
Placenta
The placenta supplies oxygen and nutrients to the fetus. After delivery, the placenta detaches from the uterus and is expelled as the so called "afterbirth".
Polycystic Ovary (PCO)
Word with Greek roots: kytis = bubble and poly = multiple. Ovary with many small cysts.
Progesterone
Combined Latin word: pro = for, gestatio = pregnancy. Progesterone is secreted by the corpus luteum. It prepares the endometrium for the implantation of the embryo.
Prolactin
Combined Latin word: lactis = milk. Hormone that is produced in the brain. Prolactin stimulates mammary gland development and lactation.
Prostate
The chestnut seized prostate gland is located just below the bladder in the male.The prostate gland produces a fluid, which helps to transport semen during the male orgasm.
Rubella or "German Measles"
A disease caused by the Rubella virus. A Rubella (German measles) infection during pregnancy can have potentially devastating consequences for the developing fetus.
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
Hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland (glandula thyreoidea).
Sterility
If regular sexual intercourse over a period of one year does not result in pregnancy, physicians talk of infertility (sterility). Sterility is not necessarily a final condition.
Sterilisation
A form of contraception.The spermatic ducts in the male, or the fallopian tubes in the female, are blocked or cut through, causing intended infertility.
TESE/MESA
If absolutely no sperm is found in the ejaculate, the possibility of extracting the sperm directly from the males reproductive tract, from the testis (TESE = Testicular Sperm Extraction) or the epididymis (MESA = (Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration).
Tubal Pregnancies (Ectopic Pregnancy)
Implantation of the embryo in one of the fallopian tubes, instead of the uterine cavity.
Uterus
Pear-shaped organ, in which the child is carried to full term.The uterus is divided into the cervix, the cervical canal, and the uterine cavity. The fallopian tubes connect to the uterus on both sides.
